The cornea is too curved or the eye is too elongated. Light entering the myopic eye is focused in front of the retina, resulting in blurry distance vision.
The ReLEx SMILE laser technique with the Zeiss VisuMax laser and the LASIK laser technique with the Zeiss excimer laser correct this refractive error by removing tissue from the center of the cornea thus flattening the cornea. This change in shape changes the focal point of light towards the back for correct focusing on the retina, and thus clear vision.
